Allen Litwiller: 2003 NWSCC Man of the Year |
|
|
  |
NWSCC’s Man of the Year for 2003 is Allen Litwiller, the current
President of Cascade Ski
Club. Cascade is in the enviable position of having a 103 bed,
50 year old lodge in the middle of Government Camp on Mt. Hood and
also owns commercial property adjoining Mt. Hood Skibowl Ski Area
which was originally the club’s jumping hill. The club was founded
in 1928 and has been a non-profit corporation since 1930. It is
often cited as one of the longest continuously operating ski clubs
in North America with a long and glorious heritage of offering
affordable housing and winter-related activities on Mount Hood. |
|
 |
Allen was appointed Treasurer of
Cascade Ski Club in
January 2002 at a troubling time when it was discovered that the
previous Treasurer had diverted a huge amount of money from the
club for his personal use. Allen reconstructed the books to
ascertain the amount of the embezzlement, over $275,000, retained
a lawyer to bring charges against the former Treasurer, and
prepared the insurance claim to recoup $50,000 of the losses. He
continues to pursue the resolution of this matter in the courts on
behalf of the club. |
|
 |
In 2002, Allen took on the position of overseeing the operation
and repair of Cascade’s Lodge, doing most of the repairs himself,
putting in cost saving equipment, and establishing policies and
procedures which enabled the lodge operations to end the 2002 year
in a favorable financial position. Allen orchestrated the smooth
transition of the Lodge to summer use by High Cascade Ski Camp.
Throughout the year, Allen made himself available at any hour of
the day or night to attend to or solve club problems as they
arose. |
|
|
Allen’s involvement with Cascade led to his participation within
the Government Camp community, contributing space for meetings,
getting involved in local activities and playing an active part in
the planning and decision making for the county-funded
revitalization of the village. Additionally, he participates in
the Government Camp Sanitary District board proceedings. He makes
it a point to attend community meetings and gatherings and to lend
support to the new
Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum, a million dollar facility
dedicated to the development of winter sports, summer activities
and the history of life on the mountain. |
|
|
As a long-time skier (46 years), former race chairman, ski event
coordinator and former ski patrolman at Mt. Bachelor, Allen truly
appreciates the opportunity to be recognized by his peers in
Cascade Ski Club,
Northwest Ski Club Council and
Far West Ski Association as NWSCC’s Man of the Year.
