In the
mid-1950s, John began sharing his on-slope expertise, eventually
becoming director of the Portland Jaycee Ski School. He founded
Western Ski Pros Ski School, which under his leadership at one
time taught aspiring enthusiasts at three different Mt. Hood ski
areas. Countless instructors facing their Professional Ski
Instructors of America certification exams had their anxiety
calmed by John’s smiling face and encouraging words, and he
ultimately became an exam coordinator.
While holding down a full-time job
in data processing management, and later owning and operating a
print shop, John found time to put his journalism background and
zeal for skiing to work. He edited and published Skiers Almanac,
Along the Ski Trails and Northwest Skiing. (John used to quip
that between his ski publishing and ski school business, he was
his own best print shop customer!) He was co-producer and
on-camera host of the television program, “Oregon Skiing.” He
wrote ski columns for a number of newspapers. His stories
appeared in SKI Magazine, Ski Racing, Ski Business, Ski Area
Management, Ski Oregon, Northwest Skier and Ski Industry Letter.
John was awarded Lifetime Honorary Membership in the North
American Snowsports Journalists Association, an organization in
which he was a forty-year member, served as Executive Secretary
for 16 years, and a Board member for another dozen.
