Salt Lake Ciy is proud to
host the XIX Winter Olympics to be held February 8-24, 2002, with the Paralympic Games to
follow March 7-16. In the meantime, they have built facilities so that almost every
necessary ski jump and downhill course is already in place, and visitors can have access
to the same sites the athletes will use in 2002! Most of the ceremonies will be held in
downtown Salt Lake City, and 5 indoor (city) facilities and 5 outdoor (mountain)
facilities will host the competitions. The Figure Skating and Short Track Speed Skating
will be conducted at the Olympic Skating Arena, just 10 minutes from the Olympic Village.
The Ice Hockey will be at the "E" Center; 10 miles west, and at The Ice Sheet at
Provo, 55 minutes away. The Long Speed Skating events will be at the Oquirrh Park Oval at
Kearns, about 25 minutes away. |
Looking Ahead.... But Why Wait? |

The bobsled and luge
runs are available to the public |
The Utah Winter Sports Park on
the hillside above Park City will be the site of Bobsled, Luge, Ski Jumping and Nordic
Combined events. The ski jumping facility is the only such public facility in North
America; within two hours of the first lesson intermediate skiers can be soaring off the
18 meter jump. A day pass is $10 and a 2-hour lesson is only $20! The bobsled and luge
runs are available to the public with certified instructors for minimal fees as well. |
The Giant Slalom and
Snowboarding events will be held at Park City Mountain Resort; the Slalom and Freestyle
events at Deer Valley Resort; and the Downhill and Super G events at Snowbasin. Ten
Cross-Country events, 6 Biathlon events, and portions of the Nordic Combined will be at
Soldier Hollow, 43 miles from Olympic Village. |

Tickets will actually go on sale in the fall of 2000 |
How can you or your ski club get
tickets? First, you wait until the International Olympic Committee finalizes a
comprehensive ticket program with policies, procedures and prices in December 1999.
Tickets will actually go on sale in the fall of 2000, and information on which ticket
agencies have been approved as sellers will be published in advance. Watch the Olympic
Committee web site at www.slc2002.org
for details. |
But you don't need to wait
until the Olympics to enjoy skiing the Salt Lake City areas and these exciting additions!!
Salt Lake City is one of the easiest places to reach from the Pacific Northwest, and
extremely inexpensive airfares can be found! You can either stay in the City, with a
choice of hundreds of lodging facilities, restaurants, etc., and transportation to 10 ski
areas by either public bus or rental car; or stay "on the mountain" in lodging
ranging from the upper end of luxurious to "moderate." Contact the Salt Lake
Convention and Visitors Bureau at (800) 541-4955 for comprehensive planning brochures for
your projected trip; or visit their website at www.visitsaltlake.com. |
