Jim Loyd of Big White Ski Resort and Jeff Putnam of Silverstar Mountain Resort were guest speakers at the November Council Meeting. The presentations about their respective ski resorts were well received - especially the part about having been open since the middle of October! The resorts average 25 feet of snow per year - most of it qualifying as champagne powder. Both resorts are out of Kelowna, British Columbia. Resort shuttles take visitors back and forth from the airport to their on-the-mountain lodging. Jim and Jeff described the true ski-in ski-down to the chairlifts, as many of the hotel, condo, and rental home accommodations are built higher up on the hill, and visitors ski down to the lifts.

7,000 acres of terrain with over 112 runs for all abilities descend over 2,500 vertical feet.

Big White is currently British Columbia’s second largest resort, and is nestled in the Monashee Mountains; it is protected from the coastal weather that affects Whistler, and the cold fronts that hit the Canadian Rockies. 7,000 acres of terrain with over 112 runs for all abilities descend over 2,500 vertical feet. The resort boasts bowls, glades and alpine areas, tubing, moguls, groomed and ungroomed runs, with one run as long as 4.5 miles. There are 13 lifts, including one high-speed gondola and 4 high-speed quads. Big White has recently spent over $20 Million in expansion and now offers top quality groomed runs, and a Kids Center that is ranked in the top five in the world.

Jeff described Silverstar as a turn of the century brightly painted mining town two hours from Big White. This resort is famous for its condo’s with rooftop hot tubs, and some of the top grooming crews in the world, and its champagne powder. Silverstar maintains two half-pipes; one of which is lit for night boarding. It also has Western Canada’s Steepest and Most Thrilling Tube Ride Silver Star has over 2,725 skiable acres reachable by 10 lifts, including three quads.

One thing both Jim and Jeff emphasized is that neither area ever has lift lines - So, when the knees and legs give out, there is tubing, dog-sledding, sleigh-rides, a villages with shops and eateries, work-out facilities, and much more, not to mention spectacular scenery and fresh air.

Both resorts emphasize friendliness and family orientation. And to ensure that families and friends of all snowriding abilities can ski/board together, beginning, intermediate and advanced runs are often next to one another, so that everybody can ride the lifts together, and often meet mid-way down the mountain, or at the base of the lift.

The Jim and Jeff announced that Big White is acquiring Silver Star. And while it is physically impossible to connect the resorts by ski/board runs, they will offer lift tickets valid at both resorts, as well as other benefits. Jim and Jeff donated lift tickets as door prizes to the evenings meeting.

Big White is one of NWSCC’s commercial members and sponsors. They would love to help any NWSCC club, or the Council organize a trip to their resorts. Is anybody interested in organizing an event?
