I know what you're thinking. What the heck
kind of question is that! I mean, you picked this Directory up because you either already
ski or snowboard, or you're intending to try one or the other. But maybe you're thinking
you really don't have any immediate plans to freeze your heinie off in a lift line. Or
maybe your idea of fun isn't spending those frustrating moments in sub-freezing weather
trying to scrape your goggles with the gloves you've just finished using to wipe your
nose! |

After
all, we always LOOK like we're having fun, don't we? |
Maybe you just want to find a fun
group of folks you can play with, and thought "Hey, skiers should be fun." After
all, we always LOOK like we're having fun, don't we?
"Of
course we are!" |
And you know what the great
part is? The fun is not always on the slopes! It's true. Some of the best times in a ski
or snowboard club can be had with nary a snowflake in sight. You see, the Northwest Ski
Club Council is home to snowrider clubs that not only take their skiing and snowboarding
very seriously, they also expend their energies on some off-the-snow activities that can
only be called entertaining, when they're not downright hilarious. Curious? Read on! |

Mr.
Potato Head Party |
Of the clubs that would let me
actually tell their fun little secrets, Plaza Ski Club, a group formed from a core group
of skiers working in the Standard Plaza Building, has got to have some of the best excuses
for get-togethers west of the Cascades. Bullcrinkle's Bashed Ball (named for the club
mascot, Bullcrinkle the Moose) and the Chocolate Mousse Contest, not to mention the Mr.
Potato Head Party, are highly attended functions in this ski-and-golf group. Of course,
one must find out about these big "to dos" in the club's newsletter, the Bull
Sheet (the name of which should be your first clue that this is not just your
run-of-the-mill ski club, don't you think?). Plaza is a coed club that has ski and golf
activities year-round.

Another group that has way
too much fun (thank goodness they share) is Skiyente Ski Club, also of Portland. Skiyente,
who can make a glamorous "do" out of any occasion, will be celebrating 45 years
of sisterhood (they're all women, you see) in 1999-2000, and their publication, The Maiden
Forum, can let you in on all the news about their off-the-slope fun. You can be a part of
the Butt-Bob Downhill (okay, you need snow for this, but padded lycra is not
required--although it would be greatly admired), or participate in the Inter-Galactic
Croquet Championships of the Universe starring our buddy Marvin Martian. Their fall
membership drive is a fabulous Wine & Cheese soiree, complete with fashion show, not
to mention other unofficial functions. Sorry fellas, you can't be members, but the ladies
will let you play! |

An all-male club
with over 50 years of prominence on Mt. Hood, Schnee Vogeli's heart is as big as their
imagination |
Speaking of fellas, our Men on
the Mountain, the members of Schnee Vogeli Ski Club, can be found during summer months
floating the Deschutes River at their annual rafting trip, or at their summer picnic
participating in the challenging and extremely dangerous Cross-Dresser Relay (I am lovin'
this mental picture!!). These events are brought to you by the same club that has given us
decades of good times with their incredible annual Pray for Snow event. An all-male club
with over 50 years of prominence on Mt. Hood, Schnee Vogeli's heart is as big as their
imagination--they gave a $500 scholarship to the Council's scholarship fund last year.

For those of you who like hot
fun in the summer time, Desert Ski Club's Hydroplane Race Party--held on the private
waterfront home site of a Desert Ski Club member--can't be beat. Desert Ski Club is one of
NWSCC's Washington member clubs based in the Tri-City area of Central Washington. Hot
weather, cool water, and fast, LOUD boats that reek of testosterone (even when they're
called Miss something-or-other--why is that?) ... you get the picture. Desert Ski Club can
give you this and more! |

fun
and crazy activities that can be enjoyed as a member of a NWSCC |
These are just some of the fun
and crazy activities that can be enjoyed as a member of a NWSCC club. With over 30 member
clubs, you can rest assured that there's not enough space in this entire directory to tell
you about all the fun you can have. And with that many clubs to choose from, we're bound
to have one that's right for you. So take a gander at our directory, find a club that
you'd like to try, and give 'em a call. You'll be glad you did. Trust us. (And get a
squeegie for those goggles!)
