About the
75th Anniversary Convention

75th Anniversary
The 2005 Far West Ski Association Convention was an exciting celebration of the 75th Anniversary of FWSA.   Most of the Convention was dedicated to the history of skiing in the United States, the 75 year history of FWSA, and the histories of its member clubs and councils.  Northwest provided history displays by NWSCC, Mountain High, Skiyente, Bergfreunde, and the Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum.

Man & Woman of the Year
Steve Coxen and Debbi Kor represented Northwest Council as Man & Woman of the Year.  Steve went on to win the top award as FWSA Councils' Man of the Year.  Steve won a 5 day trip for two to Big White and Silver Star Resorts.  Debbi received a 2 day trip for two to Big White for her participation.   A big Thank You to Big White and Silver Star for their sponsorship of this Far West program.

Celebrity Guests
Olympic medalists Billy Kidd, Jimmie Heuga, and Deb Armstrong were in attendance plus freestyle and extreme skiers Bob Salerno, Glen Plake and Chris Davenport.  Also attending were filmmaker Joe Jay Jalbert, ski area owner Richard Kun, Doug Pringle of Disabled Sports America, Laura Menozzi of NSAA and Marlene Finley of USFS.  We were fortunate to have two members of the original WWII Army 10th Mountain Division, and Dr. Michael Adams, son of Ansel Adams, gave a luncheon presentation of his father's early photographs.

Activities
The Convention activities began with a pub crawl on Thursday evening and a golf tournament on Friday.  Other activities on Friday included a tour of the Queen Mary, kayaking in Alamitos Bay and a tour of the Aquarium of the Pacific.  The Silent Auction on Friday night had over 100 packages to bid on; total value nearly $120,000.  The Travel Expo on Saturday morning gave delegates an opportunity to meet with ski area representatives one-on-one to learn more about travel opportunities to their resorts.  A Ski History Reception was held on Saturday afternoon with video clips from the Olympians and freestyle skiers, a short movie from the 10th Mountain Division and an early Goofy skiing Disney cartoon.  Saturday afternoon breakout sessions included celebrity guests participating in forums on World of Free Skiing, Early Development of Ski Resorts and Challenges of Disabled Skiing.  The Awards Banquet was held on Saturday night.

  Club and Council Awards
Bergfreunde was awarded the prestigious Tollakson Award as the most outstanding club of the year and first place for outstanding website (Class AAAA).  Mountain High received the Wentworth Outstanding Publication award for its monthly newsletter and first place for outstanding website (Class AA).  NWSCC received first place for outstanding council website.

  Individual Awards
Far West Ski Association gives out awards each year for service to FWSA and the skiing community.  In addition to the service awards, Far West gives an award to the Safety Person of the Year (sponsored by Aspen/Snowmass) and the Western Ski Heritage Award (sponsored by Steamboat).
